Rainforest Is No Longger a Home

Forests are a source of life. In the central highlands of Papua, the locals’ relationship with forests has changed. People here formerly relied on forests for farming and hunting, but are now turning to logging as a source of livelihood, as logs provide greater short-term profits for this low-income community. The expensive price of consumer goods imported from outside Papua drives the need for higher personal income. Changing attitudes toward the forest mean that locals no longer see it as a home, but a place to survive.
